Greetings to all of you,
It hasn’t rained yet, but many other good things have been coming down to us. Here’s a basketful of our Pascal benefactions.
The whole resurrected gang. On the way home from church Easter morning.
A good friend in the neighborhood gave a slaughtered goat for Easter, which Sam further divided into workable chunks. The first night we ate the meat in the big bowl you see here boiled in a stew.
The intestines, Gilbert's favorite, were boiled to preserve them, and saved for later.
Freidah, Rachel and Peace, peeling the "poe-tah-tows."
The next day, we grilled the rest of the fat, beautiful goat, for a nyama choma Easter feast.
Food Prep, part deux: we eat lost of grains and lentils and beans and hard peas, etc. In shallow woven baskets, large plates really, they're spread out and combed through for small stones, withered ones, other interlopers.
The pace is leisurely and efficient. It's a time to talk, and laugh.
Or think.
And make beautiful,
fleeting art.
Here’s to some order in a world that can use all it can get. From Lucky and Johnny to you.
Happy Easter Season,
David

April 14, 2012 at 11:26 pmHi Martin,
Double kill – the Star Cafe has shuttered its doors…well, if it had doors…for good. No more beans, cabbage, chapo and chai.
In mourning,

April 15, 2012 at 4:33 pmWell, David, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an instance where both “fat & beautiful” were applied to a goat, living or dead. Seems appropriate, though & I consider my horizons expanded…All Love to you…Bob

April 15, 2012 at 10:35 pmAh, want a wonderful rhythm to these days and photos. Combing through those flat, woven baskets seems like just the right pace for a daily task to have.
I remember our dear friend Rob Suarez once saying to me as we looked over a too-busy campus and day: “Where is there a place (ie a “time”) for these guys to ever play?”
That is actually, of course, a very significant grief in the way most school days go now. It’s a joy to see Red Rhino avoid the loss that Rob so wisely lamented.
Love,
Chris

April 15, 2012 at 11:38 pmHi Bob,
I should have added toothsome to the list, too. Sweet meat. I’ll bet Maritza could match it. We’ll see this summer. Fat, beautiful love to you and all the beloved in SD.

April 15, 2012 at 11:40 pmHi Peggy,
Easter was great. And now the kids are off for a month. It’s a grand time here. We even got some rain yesterday. Need buckets more. See you soon!

April 15, 2012 at 11:50 pmHi CL,
I think Rob would have been an excellent lentil comber, and I will think of him in that process from now on. We’re usually busy, but not hurried, occupied but not preoccupied. When I say we, I really mean the folks who live and work here–minus me. I am often unsettled and internally revved up over one thing and another. But I think I’m getting a little better…kidogo, kidogo.
I have some good reading ahead of me. Thanks.
